The players deservedly rejoiced, but it wasn’t long before Drogba’s thoughts turned to the civil war that had raged in his country since 2002.
“Men and women of the Ivory Coast,” he said after the match. Today, we demonstrated that all Ivorians could coexist and play together with a common goal – to qualify for the World Cup – by coming from the north, south, centre, and west.
“We told you that the festivities would bring the people together; today, on our knees, we beg you.” The players knelt to the ground. “The one African nation with so much wealth must avoid going to war. Please put down your guns and allow elections to take place. “Drogba was the last man standing.
The players then rose to their feet and chanted, “Stop shooting your guns! We want to have fun!”

With Drogba as its spokesperson and leader, the Ivory Coast national team had brought peace to the country – even if it was not to last. After controversial elections five years later, conflict erupted again, and Laurent Gbagbo, the then-president, was just this week convicted of war crimes at The Hague.
Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, on the other hand, was able to bring peace to the Ivory Coast for a short time.
