European Team Of The Season

European Top Five League Team Of The Season By Stats Revealed

The Team of the Year from Europe’s top five leagues based on stats has been revealed, after the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A and Bundesliga all came to an end at the weekend.

The shortest domestic season going came to an end on Sunday, with a mixture of high stakes drama across Europe, from Liverpool and Juventus finishing in the top four to Lille pipping PSG to the French title.

In the Premier League, Manchester City ran away with things, beating rivals Manchester United by 12 points and defending champions Liverpool by 17.

It’s no surprise then that Pep Guardiola’s side are one of only two teams in Europe with more than one player in the best XI of Europe’s biggest five leagues, according to WhoScored.

Kevin de Bruyne and Joao Cancelo are the two men who make the team from the English champions, whilst Bayern Munich have Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski.

Arsenal fans will hate to see their former goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in goal for the team, considering their problems this season.

Mikel Arteta decided to stick with Bernd Leno and allowed Martinez to move and, despite finishing below the Gunners in the league, Martinez has arguably had a better season individually.

Cancelo’s work in Guardiola’s team from right back, playing more as a central midfielder, was a huge part of City’s push for the title from 14th earlier in the season.

Mats Hummels makes it into the team after Borussia Dortmund needed a late push to finish in the top four in Germany and he’s joined by fellow Bundesliga centre back Willi Orban.

Theo Hernandez completes the back four after an impressive season with AC Milan that saw them finish in the top four.

There’s certainly some creative selection going on with Gerard Moreno and Kylian Mbappe picked as wingers in a 4-4-2, when both play as forwards.

Moreno 23 goals in La Liga made him the division’s second top scorer behind only Lionel Messi, and Mbappe scored 27 times, with a majority of those goals coming when he played centrally.

Kimmich and De Bruyne in midfield is as good as any team is likely to play with both integral to their teams winning league titles this season, and previously.

No surprise that Messi and Lewandowski are upfront. The Barcelona star scored 30 goals in the league in this campaign, despite Barca finishing third, but it was nothing on his striker partner.

Lewandowski broke a near 50 year record in Bundesliga by scoring 41 goals and bettering Gerd Muller’s campaign in 1972.
