EURO 2020 MISSING XI

From up-and-coming youngsters to established stars, a whole host of players will have to watch Euro 2021 from their living room.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Sweden/Ac Milan)

The former Sweden captain announced he was coming out of retirement for the Euros in March but a knee injury earlier in May ruined the much-awaited comeback.

Ibrahimovic made two appearances for Sweden in March, having quit the national team following their elimination from Euro 2016. He has scored 62 goals in 118 appearances for his country since making his debut in 2001.

At the age of 39, the Euros this year would have surely been his last international tournament and the injury will be a hard pill to swallow.

M.Greenwood (England / Manchester United)

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from
England’s provisional squad for Euro 2020 due to injury.

United on Tuesday revealed that Greenwood would not be in Gareth
Southgate’s party for the upcoming tournament due to an underlying
problem that also kept him out of the Under-21 European Championship in
March.

The announcement came on the day that Southgate will cut
his squad from 33 to 26 players.




United stated on their official website: “Manchester United
striker Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from the provisional England Euro 2020
squad, in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him
out of the Under-21 European Championship in March.

“Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to
maintain his availability through the intensive 2020/21 Premier League and
Europa League schedules.

“But a further spell of tournament football would not be
beneficial and Mason will remain at Manchester United to recuperate and prepare
for pre-season training.”


Marco Reus (Germany / Borussia Dortmund)



The 31-year-old says
he needs the summer to recover after a taxing season and will sit out the
European Championship from June 11 until July 11. After Barcelona
goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen pulled out with injury on Monday,
Reus is the second high-profile German to drop out before Joachim Loew names his Germany squad.

“After a complicated, energy-sapping and in the end – thank God – successful season, I have decided together with the national
coach (Loew) not to go to the European Championship,” Reus wrote on his
Instagram account on Tuesday evening. The attacking midfielder has been
in stellar form in
recent weeks as Dortmund won their last six Bundesliga games, to
qualify for the Champions League, and the German Cup final.



Eduardo Camavinga (France / Rennes)


Eduardo Camavinga’s exclusion from France’s Euro 2020 squad may have come as a personal blow to the Rennes midfielder, but it boosts the prospects of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal signing the youngster in the summer.

Saul Niguez (Spain / Atlético Madrid )

Saul has been present in Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side for nearly seven years now and played in all but five games for the club in the 2020-21 campaign as they won their second La Liga title of his stewardship.

Perhaps the fact the 26-year-old was not trusted to start as frequently last season weighed on Enrique’s mind, although with 19 international appearances to his name already he certainly is not lacking experience either.
But the fact Spain probably won’t miss a player of Saul’s quality just emphasises again the huge wealth of talent they have in that area.

Sergio Reguilon (Spain / Tottenham Hotspur)

The Spurs defender always faced an uphill battle to make the squad due to the presence of Jordi Alba and Jose Gaya, two brilliant left-backs. Spain are spoilt for choice in the department, that’s for sure.

Sergio Ramos (Spain / Real Madrid)




When Luis Enrique announced his squad for the Euros, leaving out
the talismanic skipper Sergio Ramos, most fans and experts were left stunned.

Ramos,
who has had an injury hit season for Real Madrid, has been one of the mainstays
of the Spain side from 2004. He was also part of the team that won the Euros
twice (2008 and 2012) and the World Cup in 2012.

A lack of games for Ramos due to injury was a contributing factor and Aymeric Laporte has been called up instead. Since 14 January, Ramos has played three games for Real Madrid.

For Spain, Ramos has played 180 games and scored 23 games. Have we already seen the last of the iconic leader in the colours of La Roja?

Virgil van Dijk (Holland / Liverpool)





The centre-back is one of the most crucial parts of the Liverpool defence and his absence had a major effect on them through the domestic season.

His injury in the early weeks (October) of the season has also ruled him out of the Euros, putting Holland in a spot of bother as they will be without their captain and also arguably their best player – a situation that won’t please the manager Frank de Boer.

After the Dutch failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, this seemed like the perfect time for him to get an international tournament under his belt but sadly that won’t be the case.

Earlier in May, Jurgen Klopp said the Liverpool defender is well away from full fitness and the man himself confirmed the case when he pulled out of the European Championships.

Dayot Upamecano (France / RB Leipzig)

It’s been a tough 2020/21 campaign for Upamecano, there’s no two ways about it, but the Bayern Munich-bound enforcer remains one of the most talented centre-backs in world football.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Germenay / Fc Barcelona)


Germany’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen will miss next month’s European Championship after the Barcelona goalkeeper said on Monday he needed to undergo a procedure on his knee. 

“I have decided together with the medical team of the club that I will do a complementary intervention on my knee. I’m sad that I will miss the Euro 2020 this summer with Germany,” Ter Stegen wrote on Instagram

“For the first time in many years I will be a fan at home supporting my country, I hope we win it.”
