A video shows the Leeds United midfielder running straight to the 19-year-old after his penalty miss, then consoling him in a compassionate gesture that fans loved.

One tweeted: “Kalvin Phillips covered 83km over the course of #EURO2020. More than anyone except Jorginho. He’s had a superb tournament, but I think finding the energy and compassion to run to console Bukayo Saka here was his best contribution of all.”

A second wrote: “Look at Kalvin Phillips running straight to Bukayo Saka. Classy.”

A third added: “That moment when all Italian players run past him celebrating must have been horrific, poor lad well done Kalv.”

Another commented: “As a Leeds player and fan he knows pain. So proud to see him do that.”
