Celta de Vigo captain Hugo Mallo and Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso were both sent off after a huge incident between both teams broke out in injury time.
Atletico kicked off their La Liga title defence with an away trip to the Balaidos on Sunday.
Angel Correa fired Diego Simeone’s men into the lead in the first half before Iago Aspas levelled the scores from a second-half spot-kick.
However, the 26-year-old Atletico star completed his brace in the 64th minute and restored his side’s lead.
Deep into injury time at the Balaidos, Luis Suarez received the ball from Saul Niguez in his half and found himself under pressure from Mallo.
But the Atletico striker managed to pick out an onrushing Yannick Carrasco with a superb ball over the top.
Suarez went down under the challenge from Mallo as Carrasco’s strike was denied by Matias Dituro.

The former Barcelona star remained on the pitch and clutched his leg before the referee blew his whistle during Celta’s counterattack.
Suarez climbed back to his feet and hobbled towards the referee before tumbling back onto the pitch.
However, tensions hit boiling point as Mallo squared up to Hermoso before players from both teams had to separate the pair.

Both Mallo and Hermoso were sent off by the referee, with eight yellow cards handed out over the course of the match.
Atletico sealed a 2-1 victory over Celta to begin their title defence in winning ways.
Simeone’s men will return to La Liga action on 22nd August when they host Elche at the Wanda Metropolitano for their first home match of the season.
