Manchester United now have five world class players to help them challenge for major trophies, according to the Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became permanent manager in 2019, he has reiterated that he was slowly constructing a squad that would have the quality to reclaim the Premier League title that they have not win since 2013.

According to Luckhurst, Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw are now world class players as they are each one of the best in their positions in top flight football.

During United’s 5-1 victory over Leeds last Saturday, Fernandes and Pogba were stars of the show as Fernandes scored a hat-trick and Pogba executed a midfield masterclass with four assists.

When writing about the midfielders, Luckhurst said: “Bruno Fernandes is a No.10 with unrivalled numbers, only lacking the medals to reward him, and Paul Pogba has always possessed world-class ability.”

Whilst Fernandes has consistently delivered for United since his arrival, Pogba’s form has been patchy yet Luckhurst reaffirmed that performances such as Saturday and during the Euros illustrate his qualities as a world class player.

After Varane was unveiled on Saturday, there was great excitement around Old Trafford that he may be the final piece of jigsaw of the United defence.

Luckhurst said: “Raphael Varane has been one of the standout defenders of the last decade and has mainly retained his world-class status. Harry Maguire attained it at the Euros, his absence felt by United in the run-in and in England’s dicey draw with Scotland.

“Luke Shaw would make the current world XI at left-back. You could count the number of poor performances Shaw has had on one hand over the last 18 months and it is easy to forget he is a polished centre-back in a back three.”

Even though the definition of world class players seems to vary greatly, it is undeniable that Solskjaer has constructed a considerably stronger squad that should challenge for trophies this season.
