Benjamin Mendy is reportedly “having a meltdown” after wrongly believing he would be placed on a ‘VIP’ wing while in prison.

The Manchester City and France defender has been charged with four counts of rape and one sexual assault and is currently being housed in HMP Altcourse.

After appearing in Chester Magistrates’ court on Friday, Mendy was refused bail and remanded in the category B prison.

According to The SunMendy was told he would be placed on the VP wing but he misheard and assumed that he would be placed in a VIP wing for celebrities.

But that is not the case and instead Mendy has been grouped with vulnerable prisoners. He is said to have had “a rude awakening” upon his arrival in the jail.

“When Mendy arrived staff explained he was going to be kept on the VP wing for his own safety,” a source told The Sun.

“But perhaps because he is French and his English isn’t great, he misunderstood what they had said and thought he was being taken to a VIP wing for celebrities.

He had a rude awakening when he saw the cell and realised who he was going to be mixing with.

“He wasn’t happy and it was a very sobering experience for him.”

The 27-year-old is charged with attacks on three different women, including one under the age of 18.

He is alleged to have committed three counts of rape in October 2020, as well as the sexual assault of a woman in January.

In addition, Mendy, who has been suspended by City pending an investigation, is charged with raping a woman last month at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire.

On Wednesday, a second bail application was made behind closed doors at Chester Crown Court but it was refused by Judge Steven Everett.

A second man arrested on suspicion has been released on bail but Mendy will remain in custody. Yet to formally enter a plea, Mendy is due to appear in court on September 10.
