Antonio Rudiger’s redemption at Chelsea in 2021 has been incredible.

The German defender was completely out of favour under Frank Lampard.

But Rudiger’s fortunes changed when the Englishman was replaced by his countryman, Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel showed faith in Rudiger from the outset and the defender has repaid his manager’s faith.

The former Roma man was influential as the Blues lifted the Champions League in May and he’s now arguably one of the best defenders in the world.

Rudiger is extremely solid at the back and he has also developed a knack for going on barnstorming runs from defence.

And he was at it again during Chelsea’s game against Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The 28-year-old channeled his inner Ronaldinho during an incredible foray forward in the first half.

Picking up the ball in his own half, Rudiger showed electric pace to leave James Ward-Prowse in his dust.

Carrying the ball to the edge of the box, Rudiger then produced a through ball to Romelu Lukaku that Lionel Messi would have been proud of.

Lukaku then did the rest as his smart finish found the corner of the net.

It was an incredible assist but, unfortunately for Rudiger and Chelsea, the goal was rightly ruled out for offside.

Watch it below…

What. A. Run! It would have been the best Premier League assist of the season had Lukaku timed his run.

Worryingly for Chelsea, there’s a chance that Rudiger will not be playing his football at Stamford Bridge next season.

The German’s contract runs out next summer and it’s believed that Chelsea are unwilling to meet his demands at this time.

Given his form in 2021, Chelsea should be doing everything in their power to keep Rudiger at the club. He is virtually irreplaceable.
