Cristiano Ronaldo may have bitten off more than he can chew at Manchester United.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner must have been rubbing his hands together at the prospect of securing a fourth Premier League title when he returned to Old Trafford this summer.

And while it’s fair too early to rule out that possibility, there’s no denying that the Red Devils face an uphill battle to keep the pace with Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in the 2021/22 title race.

Not only did United drop two points away to Southampton and suffer a 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa, but they have once again dropped points upon the visit of Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made wholesale changes to the side that overcame Villarreal in mid-week and that looked to have paid off in the first-half with Anthony Martial firing United into the lead.

However, everything change apart at the seams after the break with Andros Townsend eventually levelling the scores, finishing neatly past David de Gea from a stunning Everton counterattack.

And there could have been even more heartbreak for United if it wasn’t for the offside flag denying a late winner for Yerry Mina.

Such a dramatic reprieve wasn’t enough for United to turn things around, though, with the final whistle confirming that Ronaldo can’t bail out the Red Devils with a winner every single game.

And the frustration from United’s star man was clear to see with his sullen reaction at full-time with BT Sport reporting that Ronaldo immediately headed for the tunnel.

Combine that with a face like thunder and frosty interaction with Townsend, who had imitated his ‘Siu’ celebration, for an exit from the pitch that really summed up Ronaldo’s level of dissatisfaction.

Could anything better summarise United’s dire form than Ronaldo’s frustrated reaction?

Besides, ‘frustrated’ has been something of a key word for the club in recent weeks because it’s the nature of their performances, arguably more so than the results, that have angered the fans.

Ronaldo has been starved of ammunition for great swathes of his United comeback, so it’s there’s a certain unfortunate poetry that comes with him exiting yet another poor display on his lonesome.
