Not for the first time this season, Cristiano Ronaldo delivered when Manchester United needed him the most.
The 36-year-old scored in the 91st minute to salvage a point for the Red Devils in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Atalanta on Tuesday.
The Champions League is Ronaldo’s stage but it still beggars belief to see him doing it time and time again.
He is, quite simply, inevitable.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer compared Ronaldo to NBA legend Michael Jordan in the wake of his latest rescue job, and there’s an uncanny similarity in the way that both could put an entire team on their back.
Ronaldo has scored or assisted 50% of Man United’s goals this season. He grabbed late winners against Villarreal and in the first meeting with Atalanta.
We’ve run out of words to describe the five-time Ballon d’Or winner but thankfully, Peter Drury hasn’t.
The iconic football commentator, whose ability to weave sentences of pure poetry is second to none, delivered a mesmerising tribute about Ronaldo after the final whistle was blown.
“The man is a storybook all by himself,” Drury began. “There is no work of fiction more fanciful.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives thanks again for the scattering of the magical dust available only seemingly to Cristiano Ronaldo, who can reach areas other footballers just cannot reach. Whose grasp of the improbable is utterly unique. And whose timing, whose maximising of the moment, is unparalleled surely anywhere in the history of this game.
“Just when all is lost, Cristiano Ronaldo – who had scored in the first half when United barely merited it – scored again in stoppage time to earn Solskjaer a point from practically nowhere.
“He is simply a remarkable sportsman.”
Give us more, Peter.
Cristiano Ronaldo and the Champions League is a match made in heaven.
Add Drury to the mix and football fans are left in dreamland.
