Lionel Messi has come under fire for his performances for Paris Saint-Germain this season.

The Argentine was expected to tear it up for the French giants but he has not performed to the level expected of him.

He’s scored just seven times in 21 games for PSG so far in 2021/22, a poor return for someone of his calibre.

His struggles continued on Tuesday evening in PSG’s Champions League last-16 first leg tie against Real Madrid at the Parc des Princes.

In truth, Messi didn’t have a bad game, but he spurned a golden opportunity to score from the penalty spot.

Kylian Mbappe scored a late winner to ensure PSG went into the second leg with an advantage but Messi’s display was still a talking point.

Outlets in France slated his display, with L’Equipe even going as far as giving him a rating of 3/10. Only Dani Carvajal (2/10) was given a worse rating.

Sergio Aguero is a close friend of Messi and he hit back at the French newspapers for their treatment of his compatriot.

Speaking on his Twitch channel, Aguero said, per Goal: “Leo played well, he broke lines. I’m not saying that because he’s a friend, but because he played hard. He was good and very active.

“In France, magazines and newspapers killed him. They are a**holes. I had an interview scheduled with a French magazine, but I said: ‘No, because I support Leo Messi. Period. So goodbye, see you soon.’ Now I’m angry.”

If you mess with Messi, you mess with Aguero too.

Jerome Rothen is one man who has been extremely critical of Aguero.

He told RMC Sport, per Goal: “”Of course, in terms of merchandising, it’s wonderful to have attracted Leo Messi. People come to see Messi play at PSG. But you have to recognise that in a sporting context, he brings nothing to PSG.

“The biggest problem is that this was a great match, that’s where we expect the great players to perform and tonight it was more of a drag than anything else.

“There are technical errors, losses of the ball, the missed penalty – but it can happen to anyone. It’s, above all, his behaviour. He looks down at his boots, it looks like he’s not happy.”

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Messi soon made Rothen eat his words.
