Bayern Munich Get Caught Out By Villarreal’s Risky But Genius Offside Trap, Unai Emery Was Loving It

Against all the odds, Villarreal are in the semi-finals of the 2021/22 Champions League.

Barely anyone thought the Spanish side would beat Bayern Munich over the course of two legs, despite the fact they defeated Juventus in the last-16.

But Villarreal silenced all their doubters once again with a famous 2-1 aggregate victory over the Bundesliga champions.

The Spanish side held Bayern to a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena following a 1-0 victory on home soil last week.

Samuel Chukwueze scored a dramatic 88th-minute equaliser in Bavaria to book Villarreal’s place in the final four.

It was an incredible moment that capped off one of the most resilient performances by a team in recent Champions League history.

Bayern threw everything at Villarreal, but were only able to breach the visitors’ defence on one occasion when Robert Lewandowski rolled the ball into the back of the net at the start of the second half.

Unai Emery’s side were just too streetwise on the night and one of the many tricks they had up their sleeves was an ingenious offside trap routine.

In the first half, Bayern attempted to get their noses in front from a free-kick, but just before the ball was lofted into the box by Joshua Kimmich, Villarreal players sprinted towards the halfway line.

That left a number of the home side’s stars looking rather foolish in offside positions…

Well played, Villarreal.

It takes serious bottle to attempt that as well, because if one player got it slightly wrong, Bayern would have been presented with the easiest scoring chance imaginable.

But Villarreal got it spot on and that further highlights what an incredible job Emery is doing with the Yellow Submarine.

The former Arsenal manager’s tactics over the two legs against Bayern worked a treat and he’s slowly starting to turn even his fiercest critics into admirers.

After winning the Europa League last season, Emery and Villarreal now have an outside chance of going one better in 2021/22. They couldn’t, could they?
