Liverpool and Manchester United fans performed a wonderful gesture for Cristiano Ronaldo and his family after they lost their baby boy at birth.

Twenty four hours previously, the Portuguese star shared the devasting news on social media.

In a statement, he wrote: “It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our baby boy. It’s the greatest pain any parent can feel. Only the birth of our baby girl gives us the strength to live this moment with some hope and happiness.“We would like to thank the doctors and nurses for all their expert care and support. We are all devastated at this loss and we kindly ask for privacy at this very difficult time. Our baby boy, you are our angel. We will always love you. Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez.”

Understandably, Ronaldo wasn’t included in the squad to face Liverpool.

However, if he was watching, he would have seen an incredible gesture from the entirety of Anfield in the seventh minute.

When it ticked over to the minute of Ronaldo’s famous shirt number, everyone inside the stadium rose to their feet and applauded before a chorus of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ broke out. No matter your allegiances, it was an emotional moment.

And there was one man for the occasion – Peter Drury.

Often regarded as the ‘Poet of Football’, Drury just knows the right words to say at the right time.

And he did it once again on Tuesday night.

A clip of Drury’s commentary during the minute’s applause for Ronaldo has been shared on social media and it’s just so beautiful.

Drury says: “And do not underestimate… the relevance of what you hear now because this is humanity at its best. This is a Liverpool crowd stopping to applaud out of sympathy for a Manchester United superstar. This is how sport should be. Anybody who is a parent can only find intolerable the thought of losing a child. Cristiano Ronaldo and his partner lost a child. It’s desperate and Anfield sympathises.”

Emotional stuff.

After the match, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insisted that was his ‘moment of the match.’

“My moment of the game, even though it was very important and a great result, was the seventh minute when our people showed pure class,” he told reporters.

“The whole stadium together showed pure class.

“Obviously, everybody knew since yesterday, I heard for the first time about it. There are so many things much more important in life than football, and obviously, we really feel for Cristiano and his family.

“So that was my moment of the game.”
