Three years ago, Liverpool produced one of the greatest ever Champions League comebacks.

On May 7th, 2019, the Reds welcomed Barcelona to Anfield for the second leg of their semi-final tie with a 3-0 deficit to deal with.

Lionel Messi‘s brace and a goal from Luis Suarez at Camp Nou had 99% of football fans believing the Spanish side would reach the final.

Liverpool were without both Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino for the match on Merseyside as well, but still managed to complete the turnaround of all turnarounds.

Two goals apiece from Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum secured a 4-0 victory that will be waxed lyrical about for centuries to come.

What a night it was at Anfield.

The moment that ultimately booked Liverpool’s place in the 2019 final was masterminded by Trent Alexander-Arnold and Origi.

A quickly taken corner by the former caught Barcelona napping and the latter expertly fired the ball past a despairing Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Will Liverpool fans ever stop enjoying footage of that goal? No, no they will not.

At the time, most watching the action could not believe the events they’d just seen unfold in front of their eyes.

And judging by footage from the dressing room after the game, Alexander-Arnold was also in a state of disbelief…

We know how you feel, Trent.

Liverpool went on to play Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019 Champions League final, a match they won 2-0 thanks to Salah and Origi’s goals.

It was far from a classic at the Wanda Metropolitano, but Jurgen Klopp’s side got the job done to win the competition for the sixth time.

Liverpool will have the chance to make it seven on May 28th when they play Real Madrid in Paris.

It will also be an opportunity for the team – Salah in particular – to get revenge for their defeat in the 2018 final, a match defined by Loris Karius’ two howlers.
