Liverpool Defeat Man City 3-1 To Win Community Shield as Darwin Nunez silences Doubters As Erling Haaland Misses Sitter

Darwin Nunez scored a debut goal for Liverpool as the Reds secured a 3-1 victory over Manchester City to lift the Community Shield on Saturday afternoon.

English football’s current two best teams went head-to-head at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, rather than Wembley Stadium, for this season’s curtain raiser.

Trent Alexander-Arnold put Liverpool 1-0 up in the first half before Julian Alvarez scored a controversial second-half equaliser. But late goals from Mohamed Salah and Nunez won the game for Liverpool.

Adrian made a rare start in goal in the absence of Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher, but there was no place in the Reds’ XI for the club’s £85 million record signing Nunez.

On the other hand, City boss Pep Guardiola handed a start to the Premier League champions’ star summer signing Erling Haaland.

The bookies’ favourite to win the 2022-23 Premier League Golden Boot award struggled to get involved in the game during the first half. In fact, no player had fewer touches in the opening half (eight) than the former Borussia Dortmund star.

Alexander-Arnold opens the scoring

And it was Liverpool who took the lead in the 21st minute through Alexander-Arnold, whose strike from the edge of the box deflected off Nathan Ake before sailing past Ederson.

Haaland had two chances in quick succession to level the scores before half-time but surprisingly failed to make the most of either goalscoring opportunity.

Nunez, who has blown hot and cold in pre-season, replaced Roberto Firmino for the final 30 minutes.

Alvarez, another of the summer signings on show, also entered the fray for City just before the hour-mark alongside Phil Foden.

Nunez almost marked his competitive debut with an immediate goal after coming on. The Uruguayan was denied by Ederson, who saved with his face.

Alvarez went one better minutes later, scoring a controversial first goal for City following a VAR review.

The Argentine forward’s goal was initially ruled out for offside before the decision was reversed. Liverpool, however, may feel that Adrian had both hands on the ball when Foden dispossessed the Spanish goalkeeper.

Salah and Nunez win it for Liverpool

But it didn’t matter in the end because Salah’s emphatic penalty and Nunez’s close-range header won the match for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Reds were awarded a penalty when Nunez’s goal-bound header was blocked by the hand of Ruben Dias.

And up stepped Salah to win Liverpool the Community Shield with a superb spot-kick past Ederson.

And then Nunez sent the Liverpool fans wild by netting his first official goal for the Merseyside outfit.

Erling Haaland misses late sitter

And there was still time before the final whistle for Haaland to miss an absolute sitter from close-range.

Oh, Erling!

It’s Nunez and Liverpool who end today with the bragging rights, but the season has only just begun.
