Erik ten Hag has berated his Manchester United squad following their 4-0 defeat away to Brentford

Erik ten Hag has berated his Manchester United squad following their 4-0 defeat away to Brentford.

United completely capitulated in an abysmal first-half performance riddled with individual and team errors, conceding three times inside half an hour.

A fourth goal went in after just 35 minutes with the Red Devils all at sea, in what was a miserable afternoon that didn’t pick up in the second half.

The Red Devils again looked uncomfortable on the pitch as they tried to implement Ten Hag’s tactical approach in building out from the back.

David de Gea failed to save a tame shot from Josh Dasilva when United were caught on the ball after 10 minutes, giving Brentford a 1-0 lead.

From that, Ten Hag’s side’s heads completely dropped and Brentford ramped up the pressure. De Gea was caught on the ball again eight minutes later when he tried to play a short pass, but it was intercepted and fired into the back of the net by Mathias Jensen.

Brentford added their third from a corner after half an hour. United were again unorganised and by this point zapped of confidence, as Ben Mee dominated Lisandro Martinez to head in from a corner. Bryan Mbeumo then made it four with United hopelessly caught out on the counter.

Ten Hag pulled no punches speaking to beIN SPORTS after the humiliating affair, delivering a scathing assessment of the game. Be sure to watch the video below.

Ten Hag admitted it was ‘quite clear’ when asked about the impact of the loss on the team: “It’s rubbish. It’s poor. We need higher standards than that, that’s clear.”

When asked about where it has gone wrong following a bright pre-season, the Dutch manager wasn’t keen to find any excuses for the poor start: “I can bring up several things why [it’s gone wrong so far], but it looks like excuses, and excuses are not there in a top [club].

“We have to deliver, and we didn’t do.”

He added: “We have to change. That’s quite clear. We have to start better, we have to stick to the team, stick to the plan… We didn’t do that today.”

“One mistake, okay, can happen. But then a second and a third mistake – it’s not acceptable. It is what we have to work on and players have to know that.”

When asked if he felt pressure following the defeat, he insisted that pressure is ‘always there’ and that he has to now find solutions.

Ten Hag was also interviewed by Sky Sports after the match, and admitted, via @UtdReport on Twitter, that new players are needed, and that he could’ve made more than just five substitutions: “We need new players and quality players. We will try and convince them to join.”

“Mistakes are part of football, you have to keep going but you have [to] especially act — It [three subs at half-time] was about bringing fresh ones. I could have changed all eight others as well.”

United now sit bottom of the Premier League table after two games. The last manager to lose his first two games in charge of the club was John Chapman in 1921.

They face Liverpool next time out in the league and now face the very serious prospect of being without a win in the first three games of the season.
