Jurgen Klopp launched into a surprise attack on former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonhalor over post-match comments he made following Man United’s 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Brentford.

The Liverpool boss had his press conference at the AXA training centre this morning ahead of his side’s trip to Old Trafford to play United on Monday.

Both sides are still waiting for their first win of the season, with Liverpool drawing their opening two fixtures and United suffering consecutive defeats.

On Saturday night, they were blitzed 4-0 by Brentford, who scored four goals in 35 first half minutes. There has of course been widespread negative reaction to the dismal defeat.

On a phone-in, Agbonhalor ripped into United for their display at Brentford, saying Erik ten Hag’s side played “like strangers on the pitch”.

But Klopp came to United’s defence in his presser. Out of nowhere, he called out Agbonhalor, capped three times by England and reminded him that Liverpool beat Villa 6-0 in Klopp’s first spell.

Outraged by what he was hearing on talkSPORT, the former Borussia Dortmund boss claims he nearly phoned in to vent his opinion.

“We forget in these moments how good Brentford is. It was that bad, I watched the first half here then I drove home and coincidentally listened to talkSPORT – Gabby [Agbonhalor] – he lost against us 6-0 when I had my first year. I couldn’t remember him as a mentality monster on the pitch.

“What he said about United on that show, I was close to calling in. I was close to calling in and telling him that you have completely forget that you have been player. It was unbelievable.

“And if ex players go already like this, then you can imagine how everything else is going. You just have to ask yourself how you would want to react in a situation like this and of course [it is] to fight back.”

The game Klopp is referring to happened in February 2016 when Daniel Sturridge, James Milner, Emre Can, Divock Origi, Nathaniel Clyne and Kolo Toure were all on target in a resounding away victory.
