Phil Jones’ Man Utd career hits new low after Erik ten Hag decision

The turbulent Manchester United career of Phil Jones has seen yet another low as the veteran defender reportedly no longer shares a dressing room with the Red Devils’ first-team stars.

The injury-prone 30-year-old centre-back has made just 13 appearances for the club in the last four seasons after suffering a succession of fitness setbacks.

The main changing room at the United’s Carrington training complex now bursting at the seams following the summer arrivals of Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Martin Dubravka, Tyrell Malacia and former Ajax duo Antony and Lisandro Martinez.

Who else has Ten Hag kicked out of Man Utd’s first-team changing room?

Due to those space restrictions, Jones must now dress in the Under-23 changing room. Others believed to have been told to relocate by the Dutchman include third-choice left-back Brandon Williams, as well as fellow youngsters Teden Mengi, Axel Tuanzebe and Shola Shoretire

All except Jones are early in their careers and still have an opportunity to force their way back into first-team contention.

For the veteran defender, though, it appears to be the end of the road. Now well down the pecking order in terms of centre-backs at Old Trafford, Jones has less than a year to run on his current deal – and it’s almost laughable to suggest that it will be renewed.

Jones himself admitted that his United stint had essentially been a failure in the eyes of fans during a 2019 interview where he insisted that he would refuse a testimonial match if it were offered to him.

Other than his mum and dad, he joked: “Who else would turn up?”

What’s next for Jones?

As mentioned above, Jones still has the better part of nine months left to run on his £110,000 per-week contract at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

According to a July report from the Daily Express, Wayne Rooney’s DC United were interested in securing Jones’ services over the summer.

However, the MLS side’s interest soon cooled when the Red Devils demanded that they stump up £15 million or pay Jones’ wages for the duration of a loan deal.

We reckon that stance might well have changed if Rooney comes knocking again in January.

Given the strength and depth in United’s new-look squad, there’s every chance that Jones has played his last game for the club.
