Alexis Mac Allister praised for changing subject during post-match interview to talk about Cody Gakpo

Alexis Mac Allister took the opportunity to publicly back Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo after their 3-1 win over Sheffield United – and his kind words are being praised by many.

The Argentine midfielder, who has been one of Liverpool’s standout performers this season following his £35 million move from Brighton, netted a goal of the season contender on Thursday night.

As Jurgen Klopp’s side pushed for a late winner, Anfield erupted in the 76th minute, when Mac Allister restored their lead with a strike out of the very top drawer.

The 25-year-old has been involved in 10 goals in his last 10 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, and his contribution was praised by Klopp after Thursday’s full-time whistle.

“He is a super important player for us, a wonderful boy. I met his dad after the game. He said thank you, I said gracias. That was the full conversation,” Klopp said. “He is a wonderful player.”

Liverpool would later put the game to bed through Netherlands international Cody Gakpo, who has come under fire for his performances of late.

But in his post-match interview with TNT Sports, Mac Allister decided to praise his teammate in a moment that brought a huge smile to the face of Gakpo, who clearly appreciated the gesture.

“Let me say something, I’m really happy for this guy,” he said, changing the subject.

“He’s been working very, very hard and today he got his goal. I’m very glad because he’s one of these guys that works very hard, and he’s always positive and a good leader for the group.”

Mac Allister added: “I’m very happy for him and for the team.”
