A popular soccer celebration, known as the “Siu,” made headlines recently when NFL player Patrick Mahomes decided to give it a try. Mahomes, who has a stake in the women’s soccer team KC Current, cheekily replicated the move during a match, much to the amusement of fans.
During the game, Mahomes skillfully directed the ball into the right-hand corner of the ground, reminiscent of Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic celebration. Standing in front of IShowSpeed, a well-known supporter of Ronaldo, Mahomes playfully imitated the celebration and jokingly remarked, “That’s your Ronaldo, right?”
Ronaldo’s celebration has been imitated by other athletes
This isn’t the first time Ronaldo’s celebration has been imitated by other athletes. In March, tennis star Novak Djokovic paid tribute to Ronaldo during a casual soccer match. Mahomes, joining the ranks of those paying homage to the soccer legend, showed his admiration for Ronaldo through his celebration.
Interestingly, the ‘Siu’ has also made its way into other sports. Giannis Antetokounmpo, a basketball player and minority owner of Nashville SC, performed the celebration before a match last summer.
Ronaldo himself has been showcasing the ‘Siu’ since his time with Real Madrid in 2013. Over the years, he has carried the celebration with him to different clubs, including Al-Nassr, Juventus, and Manchester United.
As for Mahomes, his talents extend beyond football. Leading the Chiefs to their second consecutive Super Bowl victory, Mahomes continues to impress with his skills on the field. With an impressive average of 36.5 throwing touchdowns per season, Mahomes will likely have many more opportunities to showcase the ‘Siu’ in the end zone in the upcoming season.
