Andre Onana transforms into a midfielder before delivering a defense-splitting pass

Manchester United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana exhibited his adeptness at playing the ball with flair, briefly adopting a midfielder’s role during the team’s match against Tottenham.

Onana is participating in his second competitive game for United following his transfer from Inter Milan in July.

A crucial reason for his acquisition by manager Erik ten Hag was his capability to initiate play from the back. Onana doesn’t shy away from taking calculated risks and positioning himself in potentially challenging areas to receive the ball.

This skill was put on full display against Tottenham when he outpaced his opponents to reach a high ball upfield. Upon controlling it with his left foot, he took a series of forward touches, successfully evading Richarlison’s pressing.

Eventually, he delivered an accurate pass out wide to Alejandro Garnacho on the left flank. The pass not only split the defense but also reached Garnacho, who was advancing into a position to exploit Tottenham’s defensive line.

Unfortunately, the move eventually came to nothing, as Garnacho’s low cross was blocked by Spurs defender Micky van de Ven.

But Onana’s involvement was just another example of what the Cameroon international is capable of – and why he is rated as one of the world’s best goalkeepers with the ball at his feet.

United have had chances to open the scoring at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Marcus Rashford heading narrowly over from six yards. Antony, meanwhile, curled a left-footed effort over the bar.

But their best chance of all so far fell to captain Bruno Fernandes, who broke the offside trap before heading wide from close range.
