Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has aimed a dig at Sunderland fans in latest social media post following his side’s victory in the FA Cup third round.
For the first time since 2016 Sunderland faced Newcastle in the Tyne and Wear derby in the FA Cup third round.
The tie which is regarded as one of the biggest derbies in the England was highly anticipated with the Black Cats hoping for an upset and seventh consecutive home derby win.
However, things didn’t go to plan and a string of errors from a young Sunderland side led to a comfortable 3-0 win for The Magpies.
A Sunderland own goal from Dan Ballard followed by a brace from Newcastle striker Alexander Isak ensure Eddie Howe’s side progressed to the next round.
Highly-rated midfielder Bruno Guimaraes played the full 90 minutes at the Stadium of Light and taunted Sunderland fans on social media afterwards.
He posted a screenshot on X of his Instagram story that depicted a 3-0 result from a match between the two sides that he had previously played on the video game FIFA 23.
The result is much needed for Newcastle and eases pressure on Howe after a run of three straight defeats in the Premier League.
It allows the players to regroup ahead of two tough games at home to Manchester City and away to high flying Aston Villa.
Defeat today would have led to speculation about Howe’s future at the club, with expectations high following their performance last season and investment in the squad.
The Magpies are currently ninth in the table 11 points off Arsenal in fourth. If they want to keep star players like Bruno in the long term then they need to do all they can to secure Champions League football.
The FA Cup also represents a chance for them to win major silverware for the first time since 1955.
