Gareth Southgate’s England have been called Germany’s “easiest” Euro 2020 opponents ahead of their huge last-16 clash on Tuesday at Wembley.
That is according to Stefan Effenberg, who believes Germany have been underestimated in their Euro 2020 campaign so far.
Germany were defeated 1-0 in their opening Group F clash against France before they bounced back with a stunning 4-2 win over Portugal.
Joachim Low’s side fought hard to secure a 2-2 draw against a resilient Hungary, which ensured Germany second place in Group F behind France.
Speaking ahead of the England match, former Germany international Effenberg claimed his country clashed with “incredibly difficult opponents” so far.
The 52-year-old told German TV channelSport1: “I think England will be our easiest opponents so far.
“In the group, we had world champions France, European champions Portugal and Hungary as incredibly difficult opponents. We survived it.”
England defeated Croatia 1-0 in their opening Euro 2020 clash before a disappointing 0-0 draw against Scotland at Wembley.
However, the Three Lions ensured they topped Group D after their 1-0 win over the Czech Republic at Wembley.
Manchester City star Raheem Sterling has scored twice at this summer’s Euros, but no other England player has found the back of the net.
England captain Harry Kane has been heavily criticised for failing to make an impact at Euro 2020 so far.
And Effenberg claimed the England attack force around the Tottenham striker has “not appeared at all.”
The former Borussia Monchengladbach star explained: “The English have not yet really had an impact on the tournament and the attack around Harry Kane — which distinguishes them — has not appeared at all.
“So, I’m sure we will win the game. The pressure is on the English. You play at home. Even if it’s a young team, they are expected to win the title.”
