Manchester United winger Antony faced ridicule from fans after a peculiar video surfaced on his Instagram, depicting him celebrating a Sao Paulo goal while shirtless.
Antony joined United in the previous summer for a hefty £85 million, following a path similar to Erik ten Hag’s transition from Ajax to Old Trafford.
However, the Brazilian player encountered challenges during his debut season in English football. Antony has participated in 45 matches for United across all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing three assists.
Yet, his inconsistency and questionable decision-making have led to criticism from the United fanbase. Antony’s behavior both on and off the field has come under scrutiny.
A video clip has emerged online, showcasing Antony’s exuberant celebration of a Sao Paulo goal in a Copa do Brasil match against Corinthians, which Sao Paulo won 3-2 on aggregate. The video portrays Antony standing shirtless in his living room, celebrating the goal with fist pumps in front of his television. You can watch it below..
Fans were quick to voice their disapproval of Antony’s actions on social media platforms like Twitter.
One person said: “Meanwhile he is making us shed tears. He needs to go back to sapa lo.”
Another wrote: “Antony is finished at 23.”
A third person said: “Let’s hope he scores soon too.”
In defence of the attacker, another person insisted: “Antony is a great player, but I forgot people on Twitter know more ball than Ten Hag.”
Last weekend United legend Gary Neville insisted that Antony would need to “explode” this season if the Old Trafford club want to have a chance of winning the title.
Speaking after United’s narrow 1-0 victory over Wolves, Neville added that United challenging for the Premier League title this season is ‘unrealistic.’
“There will be those that say Manchester United should be challenging for the title now,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“But realistically, looking at where Arsenal are and how they have recruited this summer, and looking how established Manchester City are, I think it would be unrealistic and harsh to say Manchester United should be competing for the title.
“For that to happen, Antony would have to explode this season, Marcus Rashford would have to hit the same numbers, and Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Andre Onana would have to hit the ground straight away.
“That is difficult; Hojlund is young, Onana has taken the most pressurised job in English football – Manchester United goalkeeper.
“I still think third and a trophy would be a success, but I understand where the pressure comes from after their spending under Erik ten Hag.”
