Real Madrid remains confident of signing Mbappe, but France star hasn’t closed the door on PSG stay.
The Blancos continue to make the World Cup-winning a top transfer target, but new terms could yet be agreed at Parc des Princes.
Could Mbappe end up in Spain?
The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to Real for several years, with the Spanish champions initially connected with the forward when he was still at Monaco.
There was even some surprise when Mbappe moved to PSG in 2017, initially on loan, for a fee of €145 million, such was the expectation that he would move to Real.
The France international is in no rush to end the uncertainty surrounding his future, with the plans to wait until the end of the season and assess where PSG stands at that point.
With his contract expiring in 2022, rumors have intensified again, despite an offer to extend from PSG. According to reports in Spain, Mbappe does want to make a move to the Spanish capital now.
Cuatro and Cadena SER, via AS, report that the World Cup winner has made up his mind and doesn’t want to sign a new deal or wait until next summer to move for free.
While Liverpool, and others, are also believed to be interested in the forward, he desires to join Real.
Mbappe’s performance against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night proved exactly why Real would be desperate to sign him and exactly why PSG want to keep hold of him.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side remains in the hunt for Ligue 1 and Champions League glory, with major silverware always a useful bargaining tool, and is looking to tie up other deals.
Can Madrid put a deal in place?
Florentino Perez is ready to make one or two big signings. He attempts to rebuild Zinedine Zidane’s squad, and Erling Haaland is also on their radar, with the club having spoken to the Borussia Dortmund player’s agent.
Zidane has reportedly stayed in touch with Mbappe over the years, although the three-time Champions League-winning manager’s future has also been rumored to be questionable in the past.
The bigger picture
Fundamental believe they can give Mbappe everything he needs on personal and professional levels, with it up to him to decide which route he heads down at an essential career crossroads.
A top-ranking official at the Bernabeu has said: “It will depend on whether he wants to be in a ‘golden prison’ or succeed here.”
Unfortunately for the Blancos, acquiring Mbappe will not be straightforward whatever happens.
He would need to inform PSG of his desire to move on, leaving them in need of a suitable replacement.
A fee would have to be agreed that suits all parties, as those in France cannot afford to lose a top talent for nothing next year.
It may be that Real eventually gets their man, with Florentino Perez seeking another ‘Galactico’ following his re-election in Madrid. Still, there is a long way to go before that dream becomes a reality.
