Reports suggest that Lionel Messi is unwilling to accept the terms of a new contract with PSG, leading to speculation of a potential return to FC Barcelona this summer.
The Argentine, who joined PSG in 2021, is currently a free agent and has been linked with a move back to his former club ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Although PSG is interested in keeping the World Cup-winning player in the French capital, there are concerns about his willingness to take a pay cut.
This could make it difficult for the club to retain him as they aim to secure their first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy.
As reported by ESPN, Messi’s latest contract offer includes a 25% wage reduction, something which the Argentine is unwilling to accept.
PSG reportedly aims to reduce Lionel Messi’s weekly wage from around €780,000 to €585,000, sparking rumors of his potential departure from the club.
This would mark Messi’s third move in his career, with many speculating that he could return to Camp Nou.
Despite Barcelona’s financial struggles, they are reportedly interested in re-signing Messi and he has reportedly set three conditions for his return.
PSG fans haven’t reacted well to the news of Messi’s potential departure and they made their feelings known as they jeered after his name was announced on the Parc de Prince tannoy on Sunday night.
Messi’s former Barcelona teammate Thierry Henry was quick to react to the boos, as he urged Messi to return to Barcelona ‘for the love of football’ after the ’embarrassing’ incident, as he told Amazon Prime Video:
“Personally, I would like to see him finish his career at Barcelona, in Europe. After that, I don’t know what he will do. Because the way he left Barcelona after everything he did… I didn’t really like it.
“For the love of football, he should go back to Barcelona.”
