Speaking toLiverpool’s official websiteafter the friendly against Bayern, Klopp explained: “Yeah, [it was] knee on knee. He could have played on.
“So firstly I got the information that it’s too painful, so it was clear that we will change. There’s no need to push him through.
“When I spoke afterwards he said, ‘No, no, I would have been fine’. But we didn’t want to go [with] any risks.
“It’s just knee on knee, bruise. That’s it. It was fine.”
Klopp’s comments will come as a relief to Liverpool supporters, with the first team already short on numbers in midfield following the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.
Liverpool eventually lost the Bayern friendly 4-3, despite going 2-0 up early in the second half.
Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane pulled the scores level shortly before half-time, before Luis Diaz put Liverpool back ahead after the break.
But goals from Josip Stanisic and Frans Kratzig sealed the win for the reigning Bundesliga champions, who are targeting a move for Tottenham star Harry Kane to add to their attack this summer.
