Luka Modric Gets Emotional As Croatia Teammates Give Him Standing Ovation

Luka Modric wasn’t even bothering to hold back
any tears as he got emotional when his teammates gave him a standing ovation
for becoming Croatia’s most capped player.

Croatia resurrected their World Cup qualifying
campaign against Cyprus on Saturday night, winning 1-0 to avenge their defeat
to Slovenia earlier in the week.

Although the three points were the most
important thing on the field, the players were able to celebrate Modric’s
success off the field.

By making his 135th appearance for the national team,
the Real Madrid midfielder surpassed Darijo Srna’s previous record of 134 for
the country.

After the game, his teammates gave him a
standing ovation and a cake with the number 135 iced on it, and Modric was
overwhelmed with emotion.

With this achievement, the 35-year-old joins Oman’s Ali Al-Habsi, Kuwait’s Waleed Ali, and Honduras’ Noel Valladares in joint 70th position on the all-time list of most foreign caps in men’s football.

If he wins his 136th cap against Malta on Tuesday, he will pass Fabio Cannavaro and Alexis Sanchez for second place on the all-time list.

For the national team, the former Spurs midfielder is unquestionably a legend. Modric not only set the club’s record for caps, but he also helped them reach the 2018 World Cup final.

His results in Russia secured him the Golden Ball award for best player, and he received the Ballon d’Or the following year after Real Madrid won the Champions League.

After losing their first qualifier to Slovenia, the team is still fighting for a place in the finals in Qatar in 20 months.

Russia has won both games, Croatia and Slovenia have three points each, and Slovakia has two points, with only the top spot ensuring a trip to the Middle East.
