Manchester United is said to be actively pursuing a replacement for Harry Maguire. In the recent summer transfer window, Maguire’s future became uncertain when he was stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag.

The 30-year-old defender was strongly linked with a transfer to West Ham United during the summer, and it was reported that both clubs had agreed on a fee.

However, the move ultimately did not come to fruition, leaving Maguire at United. Despite this, his long-term future with the club remains uncertain.

Looking ahead, United are reportedly looking to beat Liverpool to the signature of Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio, who could serve as the perfect replacement for Maguire.

According toFootball Insider, Portuguese club Sporting are resigned to losing their highly-rated defender.

Reports suggest that Manchester United has been monitoring the 22-year-old defender in recent weeks as manager Erik ten Hag prepares for the January transfer window.

In August, Goncalo Inacio signed a new contract with Sporting Lisbon, extending his stay until the end of the 2026/2027 season. This new contract also introduced a higher release clause, which is believed to be £52 million.

Previously, Inacio’s contract reportedly had a release clause of just £39 million, and during that time, Liverpool and Newcastle United were among the clubs linked with the young center-back.

In the 2022-2023 season, Goncalo Inacio made a significant impression, featuring in 52 matches across all competitions. During these appearances, he managed to score four goals and provide three assists.

In a recent international match last month, Inacio showcased his talent by scoring twice in Portugal’s resounding 9-0 victory over Luxembourg in Euro 2024 qualifying.

As his performances continue to improve and gain attention, numerous clubs across Europe are likely to closely monitor Inacio’s development. If Manchester United is genuinely interested in signing the Portuguese defender, they may need to act swiftly to secure his services.
