A Manchester United fan has caused massive controversy online after listing who manager Erik ten Hag must build his team around.
United have made their worst start to a campaign in six decades. Wednesday’s 4-3 defeat to Copenhagen leaves them rock bottom of their Champions League group and on the brink of elimination.
Pressure is mounting on Ten Hag, although rotten luck with injuries and refereeing decisions have played a part as much as his tactics this term.
The Red Devils have fielded 11 different back four variations in the last 16 games thanks to an injury crisis in defence.
Among those are Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw, both long-term absentees who are vital to United’s style of play.
Twitter user@TenHagErahas suggested those two are part of the five players United must not sell in the coming years.
He tweeted: “These are the players you build around for me, don’t care what happens to the rest.”
Behind Martinez and Shaw is goalkeeper Andre Onana, who replaced David de Gea over the summer.
Despite a shaky start and mistakes against Bayern Munich and Brentford, he’s settled between the sticks. A penalty save in the dying embers of last month’s reverse fixture against Copenhagen will do him no harm.
It means @TenHagEra would happily rip up the rest of United’s backline and the whole right-hand side.
He’s even more brutal in midfield. Only captain Bruno Fernandes is worthy of making it, although you can understand why. Fernandes shows passion like no other player and has bailed United out with winners against Nottingham Forest, Burnley and Fulham this season.
The final player chosen is Rasmus Hojlund, who has scored five goals in four Champions League games.
Hojlund is yet to score a Premier League goal but the 20-year-old’s potential is clear to see.
A few notable players are missing from the list. It means @TenHagEra is happy to sell every other midfielder at the club, including Casemiro and the rejuvenated Scott McTominay.
An even more controversial decision is letting Marcus Rashford depart, one of the Premier League’s best players since his debut in 2016.
He did send a follow-up tweet claiming Alejandro Garnacho and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have a place in the squad as backups.
Naturally, it’s got everyone talking on social media.
One person tweeted: “May as well replace the manager this ain’t saving him.”
Another replied: “Convinced United fans haven’t got a clue about football.”
Someone said: “What’s everyone’s obsession with these players?”
While a fourth added: “Just deactivate your account. This is stinky.”
