Man Utd star publicly expresses support for Mason Greenwood during his debut with Getafe

Mason Greenwood, who recently made his debut for Getafe, received public support from a Manchester United star during the game.

Greenwood came off the bench for Getafe in a La Liga match against Osasuna, marking his first competitive appearance since his arrest in January 2022 related to allegations regarding material published online.

In August, Manchester United announced that Greenwood would be leaving the club by mutual agreement following a six-month internal investigation, despite criminal charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, being dropped in February.

Despite his troubled past, Greenwood has restarted his professional career in Spain, and Manchester United’s Amad Diallo expressed his support for the one-cap England international on Instagram. Diallo shared an Instagram story showing Greenwood making his debut for Getafe, accompanied by two heart emojis.

In October 2022 Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

However, the charges were dropped in February 2023, after the Crown Prosecution Service said key witnesses had withdrawn and new material had come to light, meaning there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”.

United subsequently started their own internal investigation into the matter.

In a statement last month, Greenwood said he had “made mistakes” and took his “share of responsibility”, but added: “I did not do the things I was accused of.”

Meanwhile, United’s stated in August that “based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged”.
