What a summer its been – and granted – its not over in terms of the transfer window. To see both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo exchange clubs has been quite something for us football fans, but how has the reaction compared from the two?
Earlier this month we saw Messi swap his no.10 at Barcelona for the no.30 at PSG and now we are set for the imminent arrival of the already announced Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester United.
According toFC Business, Manchester United are the second most supported club on earth behind Real Madrid, who Ronaldo originally departed United for back in 2009. PSG are down in ninth position having only really rose to conversation at the peak of European football since the last decade.
It speaks volumes that upon the announcement that Ronaldo had agreed a return to Old Trafford, the club gained over one million followers on its Instagram account. The impact of the 36-year-old, still a global superstar, cannot be underestimated.

When PSG announced the signing of Messi through a two minute super hero themed video of the Argentine on his new patch on August 10, placing his shirt in between that of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, the Twitter football world blew up as you would imagine, with around 200K retweets and around 900K likes.

Manchester United, who only posted on Twitter that an agreement had been reached with the Portuguese legend, eclipsed PSG’s post dramatically with 1.8m likes and around 600k retweets. Imagine what its going to be like when United’s content team put together his proper announcement video when we will also learn his shirt number.
If social media posts can be compared, just wait for the global shirt sales as like Messi, Ronaldo prepares to take his original breakthrough shirt number, 28 for his final chapter many are calling the football version of ‘The Last Dance’.
