Mo Salah targeted by pitch invaders in shocking scenes during Egypt vs Sierra Leone game

Mo Salah was escorted off the pitch by military officers after the Liverpool forward was targeted by pitch invaders during Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Sierra Leone.

Rui Vitoria’s side recorded a convincing 2-0 win over their Group A opponents on Sunday afternoon, as a brace from former Aston Villa forward Trezeguet sealed their second win of the week.

Sadly though, the result was marred by some unsavoury scenes late on, when a group of opposition supporters invaded the pitch.

As you can see from the footage below, punches were thrown as fans tried to get near Salah and his Egypt teammates, who watched on as chaos played out inside the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Liberia.

Security staff were quick to drag those involved away from the scene and thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Minutes later and Salah was surrounded by military officers as he made his way down the tunnel.

The Expressclaim some of the Sierra Leone fans who entered the pitch ‘intended to attack’ the Liverpool forward but it ‘remains unknown’ at this stage.

Pictures and videos of the scene soon emerged on social media and yes, that appears to be a fan wearing a Manchester City shirt.

It has been an eventful few days for Salah, who clashed with an opposition player during Thursday’s World Cup qualifier against Djibouti.

The 31-year-old forward, who has scored 16 goals in all competitions for club and country this season, netted four times as they sealed a 6-0 win in their opening game of Group A.

As a result of his efforts, Salah became the all-time leading scorer for Egypt in World Cup qualifiers.

Egypt manager Rui Vitoria believes Salah can play for another four or five years at the top level.

“He has the skills that you can’t lose, the decision-making and game intelligence,” Vitoria toldThe Athleticin July.

“He’s a fantastic professional. He looks to keep improving to stay at a high level. Sleep, breakfast, the gym — anything and everything.”
