Mauricio Pochettino has drawn a comparison between Cole Palmer and a former Manchester United player who faced challenges during his time at Old Trafford.
Palmer made a notable move from Manchester City to Chelsea on transfer deadline day for a reported £45 million and has experienced a successful transition. The 21-year-old has made a significant impact with 11 goal contributions in 18 appearances, including taking on penalty duties for the Blues.
His impressive form led to a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad in the autumn, positioning him well for a spot at Euro 2024 this summer. Pochettino’s comparison suggests that Palmer’s trajectory may resemble that of a former Manchester United player who encountered difficulties during his tenure at the club.
Pochettino has since waxed lyrical about the winger and even compared him to former Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria, who worked under the Argentinian whilst playing for Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking toTNT Sports, he said: “In the position that he plays, and because he’s a left-footer and because he has some similarities and the quality, he’s a potential Angel Di Maria.
“Angel is a world champion [with Argentina in 2022], he was in Paris [Saint-Germain] with us, and is an amazing player.
“He [Palmer] has the capacity and the potential to be close to him, with time. He’s still far away, but this type of player that can link, can be a playmaker, have the capacity to score, assist, it’s this type of player like Angel.”
Discussing how Palmer has settled into life at Stamford Bridge, Pochettino added: “Always you expect when you sign a player, you expect that they perform in the best way.
“But of course he’s performing really well from Day 1, he’s adapted very well to the club, to the team-mates, to Chelsea life, and yes it’s amazing, because always you expect the player can perform well, but he’s doing excellent.”
