Real Madrid could be facing points deduction after ineligible lineup claim

Real Madrid could face a possible points deduction after their most recent opponents submitted a formal complaint over what they deem to be an illegal substitution.

Real beat Getafe 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, with Marco Asensio scoring the winner in the 70th minute.

But there was a controversial moment late on which has prompted Getafe to take action. In the 84th minute, Asensio was being replaced by defender Alvaro Odriozola as Real looked to sure up their backline.

Asensio walked off the pitch and shook hands with his compatriot, who raced onto the pitch and into his position.

Yet, as footage from the game shows, France international Eduardo Camavinga had asked to be subbed off after picking up a nasty injury.

He then came off and Asensio stayed on the pitch, with Odriozola also keeping his place as Real’s fifth and final substitute. Juan Martínez Munuera, the referee for the fixture, did not take any issue with the reshuffling.

However, Getafe feel the substitution was ineligible as Odriozola was already on the pitch – with the laws stating “the substitution is completed when a substitute enters the field of play; from that moment, the replaced player becomes a substituted player”.

With Getafe struggling in the relegation zone,MARCAsay they have submitted an official complaint to the RFEF and Real have three days to respond as the Competition Committee assesses the situation.

If Getafe are successful in their claim, they would be awarded a 3-0 win and Real would be fined between €6,001 and €9,000.

Getafe are currently 18th in the Spanish top flight, one point away from safety with four games remaining.

Real, meanwhile, crept above rivals Atletico Madrid with the narrow victory and a reverse of the result would see them drop back down to third.
