Scott McTominay scores and then gives away penalty just minutes later against Sheffield United

In the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Sheffield United, midfielder Scott McTominay experienced a dramatic shift in fortune, going from hero to villain.

Against the flow of the game, Erik ten Hag’s team took the lead at Bramall Lane, courtesy of McTominay, who scored his third league goal in two games with a bouncing shot in the 28th minute.

However, just moments after his goal, the Scotland international was penalized for a handball in the box. VAR reviewed the incident, determining that the ball had struck McTominay’s left arm.

Oli McBurnie subsequently converted from the penalty spot, leveling the scores.

As reported by@OptaJoe, McTominay is the fifth player to both score a goal and give away a penalty in the same Premier League match for Manchester United.

He is the first since Bruno Fernandes, who did so against Brighton in September 2020.

Ahead of kick-off, McTominay paid a touching tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton following the Manchester United legend’s death on Saturday morning.

“It’s devastating to be honest with you,” the midfielder told Sky Sports.

“He was an icon at the football club and all over the world. Everyone knew him from being a legend of the game and, more importantly, such an incredible guy as well.

“He’s done so much for the club over the years and everyone is going into this game tonight thinking of him.”

McTominay added: “He paved the way for people like myself, Marcus [Rashford] and Jesse [Lingard] who came through the Academy. So for us especially, feeling what he’s done at this football club, it’s difficult. Our thoughts are with his family and everyone at this time.

“It’s difficult but the game is going ahead and we have to do it for Sir Bobby. He was an icon and a legend all around the world in football terms. My mum is obviously devastated and everyone who has grown up watching him over the years has just got to thank him really for everything he’s done for the game.”
