The reason why Brighton and Hove Albion star Pascal Gross escaped a red card against Liverpool has been revealed.
On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool arrived at the Amex Stadium looking to bounce back from their dramatic 2-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.
Against Brighton, Jurgen Klopp’s men found themselves 1-0 down after Simon Adingra capitalised on a mistake from Alexis Mac Allister.
Mohamed Salah then scored twice in six minutes to give Liverpool a 2-1 half time lead.
The Reds were denied all three points as Lewis Dunk scored in the 78th minute to make it 2-2.
During the first half, Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Gross impeded Dominik Szoboszlai inside the 18-yard box.
However, Gross was not even shown a yellow card as many fans felt he should have been sent off.
According to theLiverpool Echo, Gross was not shown a red card as the officials felt Szoboszlai did not have a clear opportunity to score and that he was moving away from the goal.
Speaking after the match, Reds boss Klopp had his say on the incident.
He said: “I don’t know – I really have no idea.
“I thought when the foul is in the penalty box, then it’s a yellow card. If it would have been outside, then a red. I don’t know – don’t talk to me about the rules. I take what I get.”
Klopp added during his press conference: “I saw it was a penalty and didn’t think about red, but I heard now it is about goalscoring opportunity.
“If it is a goalscoring opportunity, we can ask the question here: what do you think, was it a goalscoring opportunity? Hands up. I didn’t see it back… we have a few hands up, by the way! But what can I say about that? I am over it, I am too old for these kind of things. We will not change it anymore.”
