Tottenham made an ambitious offer to sign Paris Saint-Germain target Lionel Messi after his shock exit from Barcelona, according to stunning reports.
Messi is now expected to undergo a medical with PSG ahead of completing a sensational free transfer to the Ligue 1 side.
The 34-year-old Barcelona legend made his exit from the Camp Nou after an emotional farewell press conference on Sunday.
Messi, who became a free agent in July, wished to remain at Barcelona and was prepared to slash his salary by 50 per cent in a bid to sign a new deal.
However, Barcelona’s effort to keep the six-time Ballon d’Or winner at the club were scuppered due to La Liga’s financial regulations.
Speaking at his press conference, Messi revealed that signing for PSG was a “possibility” and “different clubs” were interested in securing his services.
The Argentine superstar said: “It is a possibility, but I have not agreed anything with anyone.
“I have got different clubs interested. Nothing is definitive but clearly we are talking to them.”
ESPN in South America (via The Daily Express) now reports that Tottenham were among the clubs who made an offer to sign Messi this summer.
Spurs face uncertainty over the future of star striker Harry Kane and are keen to reinforce their attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Premier League club have been linked with a £60m move for Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, who is reportedly a top target for Arsenal this summer.
Messi’s medical with PSG is reportedly set for Monday morning after the French club made a formal two-year contract offer.
According to ESPN’s Julien Laurens, the former Barcelona captain could be unveiled as a PSG player during a special ceremony at the Eiffel Tower in the ‘coming days.’
