VAR overturns Inter Milan’s penalty decision against AC Milan, fans are split

Inter Milan were denied a penalty following a controversial VAR review as the match referee overturned his decision.

Inter stunned AC Milan as they raced into a sensational two-goal lead inside the first 11 minutes after goals from Edin Dzeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

And the away team thought they were going to have the chance to make it three when Lautaro Martínez was fouled inside the box.

Jesus Gil Manzano pointed to the spot following a collision between Martinez and Simon Kjaer.

However, the Spanish referee overturned his initial decision following a VAR call as he rescinded the penalty and the yellow card to the Danish defender.

Needless to say, the penalty incident sent social media wild as some fans think the Inter captain should have been booked for diving.

One Twitter user wrote: “How it’s been overturned is beyond me.”

A second argued: “No penalty and book him for diving!”

A third added: “How can Mcmanaman and Ferdinand say it’s a nailed on penalty he never touches him”

A fourth said: “Clear pen.”

A fifth commented: “Never a penalty!!! Should have been booked for diving!”

Another weighed in: “It is both a dive and a foul. Kjaer pulls him back and makes no legitimate attempt on the ball. Martinez goes down easy so the ref sees it.”

Chelsea legend Pat Nevin slammed the Argentine forward’s actions as he accused him of ‘conning’ the referee.

“Lautaro Martínez absolutely tried to con the referee,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “He felt a hand on his waist and threw himself down. I’m delighted the referee changed his mind.”

However, BT Sport pundits Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand both believe the penalty should have stood.
