Virgil van Dijk has playfully teased a Manchester United fan regarding Liverpool’s 7-0 victory against United last season.
The Reds pulled off one of the most surprising results of the previous season, even considering United’s poor recent away record against top Premier League teams.
At the time, Liverpool was on a four-game unbeaten streak in the league without conceding a goal, although they had struggled to impress in 2023 up to that point.
While it may not have completely transformed their season, as they subsequently lost 1-0 to Bournemouth and went on a three-game winless streak, the victory served as a reminder to all clubs in the league of Liverpool’s potential when at their best.
United had been competitive in the game during the first 40 minutes, but Cody Gakpo put Liverpool in the lead shortly before half-time.
Rather than mounting a response, Manchester United simply collapsed in the second half of that match. Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, and Darwin Nunez each scored twice, and the calamitous day for Erik ten Hag’s side reached its peak when Luke Shaw’s clearance rebounded off Roberto Firmino in the box, allowing Salah to slot home for the sixth goal.
Fast forward over six months, and it’s Liverpool that find themselves in a stronger league position, with five wins and one draw in their first six matches.
On the other hand, United currently sit in ninth place with three wins from six matches. Van Dijk, recalling the memorable result, couldn’t resist playfully teasing a United fan when discussing the current state of both teams.
The Dutchman recently participated in a ‘Guess the Song’ game on Pro:Direct Soccer’s YouTube channel, where he also showcased his surprisingly good singing skills. At one point in the game, Van Dijk held a 7-6 lead over United fan and presenter Harry Pinero, setting the stage for some light-hearted banter ahead of the next round.
He exclaimed: “7-6, let’s go!”, before Van Dijk brutally responded: “You like seven, no? Sorry.”
Pinero said: “You lot call that shade? You like the seven, yeah? That was good, that was good. Well done.”
“That was one of the worst days of my life and you were responsible for that.”
“I tried my best,” Van Dijk laughed.
Pinero and his fellow United fans will have to wait until December 16 to hope their side can avenge last season’s loss at Anfield, having not won at the ground since 2015. On that day, Juan Mata scored twice – including a stunning bicycle kick in the second half.
