Fofana has since taken to Instagram to thank his “tremendous club” and their “wonderful medical team.”

The Leicester centre-back also confirmed that he suffered a fibula fracture, but he vowed to “come [back] soon and stronger.”

Fofana wrote to his 233k followers: “Hello guys, many thanks for all your messages.

“It is a bad day today but I am in a tremendous club with a wonderful medical team.

“I will give you news as a [sic] soon as I have a final diagnosis but we already know that I have a fibula fracture. I will come [back] soon and stronger: do not worry.”

Fofana’s Leicester teammates wished the former Saint-Etienne player a speedy recovery.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy wrote: “You’ll be back stronger and better.”

The Foxes’ James Justin, who is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, added: “Back stronger, brother.”

Leicester secured a 3-2 win over Villarreal in their pre-season clash, but the result was overshadowed due to the sickening injury to Fofana.

Fofana could be sidelined for some time in a major blow to Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers, who relied heavily on the Frenchman last season.

The Leicester star made 42 appearances for Rodgers’ men across all competitions in his debut season.

The Foxes will now return to action on Saturday in their Community Shield clash against Premier League champions Manchester City at Wembley.
